Judging from these coloring pages, Shrek is still going to be a firm favorite animation for many years to come. But what makes this green ogre the most interesting one we’ve ever come across? Before we can grab our green colored pens, we should read on to learn more about what makes Shrek one of the greatest animated movies in our lifetime.
Based on a Book
The great thing about doing coloring pages with our loved ones is that we get to discover a lot of interesting facts that we wouldn’t otherwise come across. While most of us have likely watched all the Shrek movies, it’s highly possible that we aren’t aware of where this story originated from. The fact of the matter is that our beloved Shrek was around for more than a decade before we saw him on our screens. Our favorite green ogre was a character for a children’s book. It’s quite similar to the movie characters that we’ve seen. However, it wouldn’t be a Spielberg adaptation if it didn’t have slight differences to the original story.
He Saved Dreamworks
It wouldn’t be the first time that we discover how an animated movie adaptation managed to save what we now know as a huge movie franchise. Since Shrek dominated our screens, he became a beacon of hope for Dreamworks pictures. In fact, this ogre gave the studio a lifeline to help the founders with re-imagining what they could become. In one of the interviews, the creator of Shrek, Jeffrey Katzenberg noted that this movie saved them financially.
It Pioneered CGI Animations
There was a time when we didn’t know what computer generated imagery was. Then Shrek came along and changed the rules of what we thought we knew about animated movies. The imagery was brighter and more full of life than ever before. Something similar to these Shrek coloring pages that we get to have fun with. This movie wasn’t even meant to be done in CGI. In fact, the only other movie that existed in CGI was Toy Story. These two movies became pioneers of what CGI influenced movies have become today.
It Won the First Academy Award for an Animated Film
It wasn’t until 2002 when Shrek became the first film to win an Academy Award. Before that, there was a lot of talk about how animated movies were generally ignored. I guess Shrek was a brilliantly animated movie after all because it wasn’t until it was created that a specific category existed to acknowledge animated feature films. We can thank this win for how huge Shrek became afterwards. This is why we can still enjoy watching it. Most importantly, we can still create magical experiences with our Shrek coloring pages after all these years.
Top Grossing Animated Film for a Decade
I was so surprised to find that it took ten years for another animated film to knock Shrek out of the top-grossing animated film spot. Moreover, it’s still in the top three of the top-grossing animated films to date. If anyone has ever doubted whether Shrek is indeed a great animated movie, this is the time to accept that it’s still ranking highly after all these years.
