How We Build VerbNow

Every printable we make now goes through the same three stages: a person decides what the page has to do for a specific age, software helps draw and draft it, and a person reviews it before it goes up. This page says exactly where each part happens, because you should know what you are printing for your child.

Where AI helps

We use Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic, together with an image generation model, in four places:

  • Research. Working out which activities parents and teachers are searching for, and which age range each one suits.
  • Drafting. Writing the instructions, descriptions and answers that sit around each printable.
  • Illustration. Generating line art for coloring pages: animals, objects and seasonal scenes.
  • Checking. Automated checks reject any page with grey shading, lines that are too faint, or the wrong page size before a person ever sees it.

Where code does the work instead of AI

Image models draw pictures well and write badly. A generated worksheet can show a malformed letter or a sum with the wrong answer, and one mistake like that defeats the purpose of the page. So we do not let an image model draw anything a child is meant to read.

Every letter, number, tracing line, table and answer key is placed by our own rendering code. On a color-by-number page, for example, the picture outline comes from an image model, and the sums inside each area are calculated and positioned by code, so the answers are right by construction.

Where people decide

  • The age range comes first, and a person sets it. A page for a three-year-old uses thicker strokes, larger areas and fewer parts than a page for a seven-year-old.
  • Generated art is reviewed by eye. We look for the wrong subject, odd anatomy and stray marks, and we redraw the pages that fail.
  • Nothing publishes itself. A person approves each new page before it appears on the site.

Older pages

VerbNow has been online since 2021 and changed owners in April 2023. Part of the library was made before the process on this page existed. We are working through those pages and bringing them up to the same standard; if you find one that does not print well or is wrong for the age it claims, tell us and we will fix it.

What we are building next

We are turning this process into a tool that parents and teachers can use themselves. Read about VerbNow Printable Maker, which is in development.
