Nature has been a part of the curriculum in some form for hundreds of years. You can look back to the 1800s and see that nature study was vital to elementary education. Teachers and parents taught children what plants to avoid, what animals were in the area, and what plants are used for food and medicine.

Over the years, nature study for children has changed to cover the different types of animals and their habitats, plants, life cycles, and marine animals. In the early years, children learn the basic animals and how to identify them. If you are considering teaching a nature unit study, here are some of the ways you can incorporate coloring pages into the study.

Nature Coloring Calendars

One way to incorporate nature coloring pages into your child’s nature studies is to use coloring calendars. These calendars can be seasonal-specific, or they can be coloring calendars you can edit. The editable coloring pages allow you to create the unit study lesson plan and give your child something to color and look forward to throughout the study plan. The coloring calendars can include flowers, animals, or a mixture of both. In fact, if you want to stick to seasonal options you can find ones that include camping scenes for the fall or beach scenes for the summer. These nature scenes can help the child understand the weather during the seasons and what animals they may find.

Nature Walk Scavenger Pages

Scavenger hunts are something children enjoy. They allow the child to get out in nature, search for various items on the coloring page, and understand the habitats animals and plants are found in. You can use coloring pages that list the items your child should look for on their nature walk. You can even find coloring page bundles that you can use to create a scavenger hunt nature book. Each page offers the chance to color the different objects you and your child are looking for. They also offer the chance to practice handwriting and spelling with traceable names of objects such as leaves, flowers, rocks, and trees.

Habitat Nature Pages

Learning about the various habitats in nature is important in early childhood studies. The habitat can let the children know when certain plants will grow and when certain animals can be seen throughout the year. For example, you can find coloring pages of bears and show how they live year-round in the habitat. You can have your children color the trees, the grass, and the forests that many bears live in. You can also show how a bear hibernates during the winter and help your child understand what the habitat needs for the bear to safely hibernate. In addition to these pages, you can also use marine life coloring pages to show the fish in the oceans, layers of the oceans, and the marine life in those layers.

Cartoon Character Nature Studies

There are several cartoon characters that can be used in coloring pages and nature studies. For example, Wild Kratz and Octonauts are very well-known and loved children’s shows. These shows focus on nature, learning about animals, and helping the environment. Their coloring pages can be mixed in with your nature coloring pages to help boost your child’s nature studies. Many sites such as PBS and other children’s networks offer these coloring pages and other nature printables to help you create the coloring curriculum that is right for your teaching needs and child’s learning.
