Female dragonflies are generally differently colored than male dragonflies, but before they mature, male dragonflies can take on female coloring, and females can take on male coloring. But you can also create fantasy dragonflies with designs never seen in nature, that come completely from your imagination. Try dragonflies created in primary colors, or tone-on-tone dragonflies. It’s easy to imagine “vampire dragonflies” in somber colors, or “fairy dragonflies” in pale pastels. You can mix and match color palettes to make dragonflies never seen before, in environments that mimic nature or environments that look like they are from another planet. 

“Natural” Color and Structural Color Effects

One of the great pleasures of a dragonfly coloring book is the ability to create different variations from page to page. Dragonflies are often a mix of colors. Some of these colors may be considered “natural,” such as black, reds, browns, yellows or greens. Other species may have a very unnatural look, with metallic shades, iridescent tones and pearlescent. These special colors are a result of how the body of the dragonfly is built, with different planes of the body and the different veins needed to bring feed the body part. Some of them may look a bit like robot insects, manufactured out of solid materials. By using different types of coloring pens, pencils and crayons, you can create many different looks for your dragonflies.
