Science Activities for Kids by Age — 9 Experiments That Work

Best for ages 3–10. The science activities that hold a child’s attention share one feature: something visibly changes within a few minutes — a colour moves, a liquid turns solid, a balloon inflates on its own. Experiments that take a day to show a result are for older children, and even then only one at a time.

Below are nine activities sorted by the age they land best, using kitchen ingredients. Every one has a measurable moment you can point at, which is what turns “that was fun” into an actual question.

Ages 3–5: things they can feel change

  • Oobleck. Mix 2 parts cornstarch to 1 part water in a bowl. It pours like a liquid and turns solid the moment a hand slaps it — a non-Newtonian fluid, though at this age “it’s both” is the whole lesson.
  • Magic milk. Pour whole milk (it needs the fat — skim milk barely moves) into a plate, add three or four drops of food colouring, then touch the surface with a cotton bud dipped in dish soap. The colours bolt away from the soap in under a second.
  • Sink or float. A bowl of water and ten objects from the kitchen. Ask for the guess before each drop — the guessing is the science, the splash is the reward.

Ages 6–7: a result they can measure

  • Walking water. Seven cups in a row, water and food colouring in every other one, folded paper towels bridging each pair. Colour starts climbing within about 20 minutes and the empty cups fill over a couple of hours. Three primary colours give you a full rainbow by the end.
  • Baking-soda volcano. Two tablespoons of baking soda in a bottle, half a cup of vinegar poured in fast. The eruption lasts a few seconds, which is why the second and third runs matter more than the first — change one amount each time and compare.   • Balloon inflated by a reaction. Same two ingredients: vinegar in a bottle, baking soda inside a balloon stretched over the neck. Tip the soda in and the balloon stands up on carbon dioxide alone. No blowing required, and the child sees a gas being made.

Ages 8–10: an experiment with a variable

  • Borax crystals. Dissolve 3 tablespoons of borax per cup of boiling water (adult pours), hang a pipe-cleaner shape from a pencil into the jar, and leave it overnight. Crystals form on the shape by morning. Change the ratio in a second jar and compare the crystal size.
  • Solar oven. A pizza box lined with foil, a flap propped open with a stick, cling film over the opening. On a clear day the inside reaches around 90 °C (200 °F) — enough to melt chocolate onto a biscuit in 30–60 minutes. A kitchen thermometer turns it into a real data-collection task.
  • Instant ice. A sealed bottle of purified water left flat in the freezer for roughly 2½ hours comes out still liquid but below 0 °C; tap it on the counter and it freezes from the top down in seconds. Timing is everything, so this one rewards a child who can keep a timer.

What to skip

Anything that needs a lighter, steel wool, or a chemical you would not keep in a kitchen is a demonstration, not a child’s activity — they watch, they do not do, and the point of the list above is that they do. The same goes for “mix everything and see” sessions: without a single thing to change and compare, it is play with a mess attached.
