Materials

  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Metallic pen
  • Paper in a few different colors
  • Marker
  • Glue stick
  • Toilet paper roll

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Tail

Crafting the tail of the mermaid.

Using your metallic pen, draw a scallop pattern from one end of the paper to the other. Repeat this pattern a few times. Then draw a mermaid tail. Continue filling the inside of the mermaid tail with this scalloped pattern. The scallop pattern will be the scales. Cut out the mermaid tail, then cut out the scallop pattern, ensuring that you follow the scallop shape.

Step 2: Glue the Tail to the Paper Roll

Glue the Tail to the Paper Roll.

Apply glue around the bottom of the paper roll. Then stick the scalloped patterned strip onto the bottom of the paper roll. Next, add glue to the top of the mermaid tail and stick it onto the roll.

Step 3: Cut Out the Mermaid’s Bikini Top

Cut Out the Mermaid’s Bikini Top.

Choose a piece of paper in a different color from the one you used to make the tail. Fold it in half and then draw a scallop shell on the paper. Carefully cut the scallop shell out. The paper was folded, so now you will have two scallop shells.

Cut a thin strip of paper – this will be the string that holds the bikini top together. Stick the narrow strip of paper on the paper roll. Then stick the shell scallops on the roll, over the thin strip of paper.

Step 4: Make the Mermaid's Hair

Using your pencil, draw two lines across a piece of paper about 1.5 inches apart. Next, cut strips into the paper from one end to the other.

Step 5: Create Curly Locks

To create curly hair, roll the fringe you have made in step four around the end of a pencil. Then cut along the pencil line that you drew earlier.

Step 6: Cut Out a Scalloped Edge

Use the same color paper you used to make the hair, and then fold it two times. Cut a scalloped pattern along the edge and then open the strip out.

Step 7: Make the Top of the Head

Use the end of the paper roll to trace a circle onto a sheet of paper. Cut the circle out. Use any leftover paper you have from making the hair. Apply glue to the top of the paper roll and stick it on the circle. Then stick the scalloped strip of paper at the very top of the paper roll.

Step 8: Stick on the Hair

Apply glue around the paper roll, then stick on the strip of curls that you created. To finish the hairdo, cut two smaller curls and stick them on the paper roll's cover.

Step 9: Draw the Face

Final step in crafting a fun mermaid.

Use a pencil to create your mermaid's face; draw eyes, eyelashes, eyebrows, and a mouth. And there you have it, a cute paper roll mermaid!
