2. Get to know about the Smurfs animated movie and characters

Before enjoying the Smurfs coloring pages printable, let’s learn about the movie and characters. It can help you understand more about the pictures you choose to color.

2.1 The Smurfs’ Role in Pop Culture

The Smurfs is the name of an animated movie that is made by Peyo – a Belgian cartoonist. And fortunately, they become an important part in the animated pop culture.

The movie tells the story about the tiny blue creatures who live in a village in the forest. They are famous for the cheerful personality and always willing to help each other.

Thanks to their strong sense of community, they can fight against the villain in the movie. When it comes to Smurfs, people will right away think of their unique appearance: blue and tiny.

Although it’s only an animated movie for kids, we can learn a lot from. It teaches us about the importance of teamwork, friendship and way to face the hardships.

2.2 The Smurfs’ Most Iconic Characters

Each Smurf character is unique not only in personality but also in appearance. Actually there are more than 100 Smurfs in the animated movie. But let’s explore some of the most iconic one:

2.2.1. Papa Smurf

Papa Smurf can be considered as the symbol of the village. He is the oldest and also the manager and leader of the activities of the Smurfs. You can easily recognize him with his long white beard and his signature red hat and outfit.

All residents respect her for his wisdom, leadership and care for all people. He is the one that lead the Smurfs through the problems and difficulties.

2.2.2. Smurfette

Smurfette coloring pages maybe one of the most famous choices in the collection. The reason is that Smurfette is one and only female Smurf in the village.

She is outstanding with the long blonde hair and the white hat and dress. As the only woman, she is very independent and always shows the care for people.

She is so smart that helps Smurfs village wins over the villan. Living among all males, she still proves the femininity and the strength at the same time.

2.2.3. Brainy Smurf

Brainy Smurf is one of the most famous character in this animated movie. Just looking at this character you will immediately realize that he is very intelligent. Because the glasses he wears give him a very intellectual and different look.

Because he believes he is the smartest, he always likes to give advice to others. However, this sometimes gets him into a lot of trouble. His slightly arrogant personality sometimes makes people in the Smurf village feel annoyed.

2.2.4. Gargamel

Every story can’t complete without a villain, not except for Smurfs. In the animated movie Smurfs, Gargamel – a wizard is that villain.

He is always trying to capture the Smurfs in the village. He has a long, crooked nose, a thin, skeletal frame, and a distinct, hunched posture. Gargamel is a classic villain, and his appearance reflects his sinister, twisted nature.

3. How to Color Smurfs Characters Beautifully

Coloring the little smurfs is a lot of fun and also improves your skills. If you want to develop your coloring skills and make your drawings more beautiful, then read the below instruction.

3.1. Prepare all the needed coloring tools

Besides the Smurfs coloring pages, of course you can’t color without coloring tools, right? So, before starting, you should gather all the needed coloring tools that I suggest.

  • Colored pencils: This creates soft effects for your colorings. They are so perfect for detailed coloring sheets, however, it will take time for large patterns.
  • Crayons: They are the classic options for both kids and adults. They create waxy base and vibrant effects for your Smurfs coloring pictures.
  • Markers: Recent years, markers become the popular choice for many people. They are perfect for bold and vibrant pictures. The down side is that it can bleed through the paper, so be careful.
  • Digital drawing tablet: A modern choice for you is to use tablet. You don’t need to print it out, just need to download and color right away on the tablet.

3.2. Prepare the color palette for Smurfs characters

The first step is to prepare the color palette which is important but doesn’t take much time. You should know which color you should use for the characters.

  • Skin: As you know, Smurfs are famous for the blue skin. Let’s prepare light blue or sky blue, you should avoid too dark blue such as the navy one.
  • Hat and Pants: The colors for them are variety. To be sure, you can prepare white and red.
  • Hair: Most Smurfs don’t have hair. However, if you choose Smurfette coloring sheet, color with yellow, and a darker yellow for shading.
  • Eyes: Eyes of Smurfs usually have 3 colors blue, black and white.
  • Mouth and cheeks: For mouth, you pick the red one and for cheeks, choose the light pink.

Making sure, you pick the right shade of the colors to portray their outstanding features. You can test the colors on a blank paper to make sure it’s right.

3.3. Color the big eras of Smurfs first

After gathering all the thing you need for coloring, let’s get started. You should color the big parts first such as the skin or the clothes. It is much easier and helps you visualize your final artwork.

  • Skin: Use your light blue color for the Smurf’s face, arms, hands, and legs. Just remember to paint evenly and in one direction to make the picture look better.
  • Clothes: It depends on the character you choose. Such as, for Smurfette, use white for her dress. Or red for papa Smurfs hat, black for Gargamel clothes.
  • Hair: This step is only for Smurfette because only she has hair. Let’s use light yellow for the base and add a little orange for more depth.

3.4. Try the shadows technique to make coloring pages depth

Shadowing in coloring is a technique that make your pictures more depth and real. The basic rule for it is add darker colors to the place where light doesn’t reach.

Pick a darker blue than the skin base. Then, you add it to the areas where the Smurf’s body is not facing the light.

The parts you can add shadows are under the hat, arms, behind the legs or on the one side of the face. If you can’t choose a darker color, you can use the same color and add layers.

3.5. Add highlight to make your coloring pages of Smurfs pop

The opposite of the shadow technique is the highlight technique. That is, you will add white, or a lighter color, to the area that is exposed to light.

These are usually on the top parts of the Smurf such as the top of the nose, on the cheeks, forehead. Let’s stop some minutes and see the whole pictures to decide where the light comes.

This makes the Smurf’s body look shiny and round. But don’t overdo it, just add the right amount of light to make it sparkling.

3.6. Colors the parts on Smurfs’ Face

Now, we come the the detailed parts on the Smurf’s face. They are just small parts such as eyes, mouth and cheeks but also play an important part in the pictures.

  • Eyes: Smurfs eyes have 3 parts, color the iris with black, then circle 1 part light blue outside. Finally, the outermost circle you just need to leave white.
  • Mouth: You fill the red or pink for the tongue, and leave their teeth white. You can also color the inside a darker red or black to make it more natural.
  • Cheeks: It’s optional if you want to make your Smurfs cute. Let’s pick a light pink and color in circle for blush to make your character adorable.

3.7. Draw some elements for the background

Most of our Smurfs coloring pages have no background or simple background. So you can be creative in your own way to make it special and personal.

You can draw any simple and cute things to your coloring sheets to make it outstanding. Do you want to try some of my suggestions below?

For example, you can draw a mushroom house with a red roof and white spots, a green forest with trees and flowers. You also can try to draw a blue sky with clouds and birds or other Smurfs playing nearby.

4. Craft ideas to make with finished Smurfs coloring pages

This will be so much fun to try some creative crafts with your coloring sheets of Smurfs. You can bring them the second life and enjoy the process with your friends or family.

4.1. Smurfs Storybook

The first idea is to make a Smurfs storybook which is perfect for kids. You need to prepare 4 to 8 sheets of blank paper, stapler or string to bind the book, and glue.

  • Step 1: To make the booklet, you need to fold all the blank papers you have in half. You can prepare more papers if you want your story book to be thick.
  • Step 2: Then, you staple along the fold or punch holes and tie with string.
  • Step 3: On each page, you glue the Smurf pictures you want. You can add other details such as mushroom, trees or flowers if you want.
  • Step 4: You can write a short sentence or even a long paragraph to describe the image. For example, you write about the biography of that Smurf or what he/she is doing.
  • Step 5: You can decorate the storybook with stickers, glitter if you have. Let’s finish by adding title for the story book, you can give it any names you want.

4.2 Smurfs Door Hanger

Do you want something to decorate your house that is made from your Smurfs coloring pages? You can make a door hanger with just a construction paper, glue, hole punch.

  • Step 1: First of all, you cut the construction paper into the rectangle shape. I suggest the size of 3 inches wide, 8 inches tall.
  • Step 2: Then, you cut a hole near the top big enough to fit over a doorknob then you glue a colored Smurf to the bottom half.
  • Step 3: You can write any quotes, sentences or messages you want such as:
    • “Smurfing… Please Knock!”
    • “Papa Smurf Says: No Entry!”
    • “This Room Belongs to Smurfette!”
  • Step 4: To finish, you can decorate the door hanger as you want with stickers, glitter. You also can use a marker or gel pen to write your name or family name.

4.3. Smurfs Diorama

I think this is the best idea for kindergarten teachers to make kids engaged in the story. Instead of just telling them story, you can encourage them to make a diorama.

For this craft, you need to prepare a shoebox or small cardboard box, colored construction papers. Some optional materials are cotton balls, pipe cleaners and mini trees.

  • Step 1: First of all, you lay the box on its side so the opening faces you like a little stage.
  • Step 2: To mimic the sky, you glue the blue construction to the back of the box. And to make it as the grass, you use the green paper and glue to the bottom.
  • Step 3: In case you have toys in trees or flowers, and houses shape, you can use them to decorate. The, using cotton balls to make the clouds to make the scene dynamic.
  • Step 4: The last step is to cut the Smurfs out of the coloring pages. Then, you glue the cutouts inside such as standing on the grass or besides the mushroom house.

5. Fun facts Smurfs you may not know

Smurfs coloring pages are funny but the characters themselves are also interesting. Let’s understand more about these blue unique characters with me.

  • They were born in Belgium: The reason is the person created The Smurfs were a Belgian artist
  • They are only three apples tall: You know they are tiny, but how tiny? They are just as tall as height of three apples.
  • Smurfette was made by a villain: The evil wizard Gargamel created Smurfette to trick the other Smurfs. But Papa Smurf used magic to turn her good and made her a real Smurf
  • All the mushroom houses are different: They live in round and cozy mushroom houses which hide in the forest.
  • They speak their own “Smurfy” language: Smurfs love to use the word “Smurf” in place of other words. They might say, “Let’s Smurf to the river,” or “That’s a Smurfy idea!”
