What You May Not Know About Porcupines

  • The sharp quills covering a porcupine are a defense mechanism. It’s more difficult for predators to turn them into dinner or an afternoon snack when one bite will fill your mouth with sharp spikes.
  • Porcupines are part of the rodent family. They look different than most rodents due to the large mound of spikes covering their backs, and they can grow substantially larger than mice, gophers, and other rodents. Some species can grow up to 60 pounds, possibly more. The prickliest animals can hold up to 30,000 quills at a time.
  • The quills on a porcupine help keep the animal afloat when they move through the water. Porcupines love to swim, but they paddle with their legs in a similar fashion to dogs.
  • It’s not uncommon for porcupines to stab themselves with their own quills. That’s probably why their quills are coated with a natural antibiotic known to stop the growth of select bacteria. They’re protecting themselves, not the larger animals who still try to turn them into breakfast.

Unleash Creativity with Porcupine Coloring Pages

Porcupines give you ample opportunity to get creative with crayons, colored pencils, or markers. They feature that tall mane of sharp quills, which you can shade with one color or a rainbow of colors. They’re often portrayed with small faces holding ornery grins or playful smiles.

Some porcupine coloring sheets feature realistic sketches of rodent-like animals with fluffy layers of spikes. Others feature those characteristic spikes with a softer appearance, giving the animal a less threatening appearance on the page.

When selecting the perfect porcupine coloring pages, you can pick the images that best fit the person doing the coloring. Realistic images are perfect for children learning about porcupines and adults who want to enjoy animals as they appear in nature. For young children and those who just want to color something cute, you may go with a more animated porcupine picture that features flowers, trees, and other elements of nature.

Reality isn’t a limitation when you’re coloring. Printable porcupine coloring sheets allow you to go wild with color. What would a pink porcupine look like or a porcupine with a rainbow of quills? Encourage your children to use their imagination when coming up with a unique look for their porcupine. It’s amazing to see how different a porcupine can look when each person is allowed to give them a creative spin.
