Difficulty here comes from how many direction changes the outline makes, not from the dot count — every page has exactly 20 dots. A rainbow’s arc bends smoothly in one direction, so it’s easy to predict where the next dot sits. A butterfly’s wings change direction sharply and repeat on both sides, so tracking which number comes next takes more focus.
Easiest first: star, rainbow, kite
These three have the fewest direction changes. The star is 5 simple points with no curves. The rainbow is one smooth arc, spaced widest of anything in the set. The kite is a plain 4-corner diamond. Good starting point for a preschooler holding a crayon for the first time.
Medium: house, tree, fish, sailboat, umbrella, flower, mug, cat face
These eight mix straight edges with one or two extra details — a chimney on the house, a trunk under the tree, a dorsal fin on the fish, a second sail on the boat, a looped handle on the mug, two ears on the cat. The extra detail means an occasional short hop between dots instead of one long smooth line, which is where kindergarten and 1st-grade kids start to get real practice.
Trickier: butterfly, rocket
The butterfly’s four wings mean the outline changes direction eight times in quick succession — the most of any page in this set. The rocket keeps a narrow body but adds two angled fins and a notched engine base near the end, so the last few dots take more care than the first few.
